CMC MOHALI CONDUCTED A SEMINAR ON ADOLESCENTS PSYCHOLOGICAL ISSUES

A seminar was conducted on the topic “Adolescents Psychological Problems from Home to School” at Gem Public School, Phase 3B2, Mohali on 29th November 2014. It was interactive seminar with school teacher and the parents of adolescents.

The Objective of the seminar was to give training and education to parents as well as the teacher for effective communication and effective discipline, to help them identify signs and symptoms of common mental health disorders in adolescents, such as depression, anxiety, anger, internet/mobile addiction, eating disorders, psychosexual issues etc.

            Upon completion of the seminar, the parents and teachers were:

  • Acknowledge unique variations in presenting psychiatric symptoms in this age group
  • Understand the high likelihood of co-morbidity in this age group
  • Be  aware of the use of multimodal treatment in children and adolescents

PRESSURES

  • Transition into middle school and becoming a teenager can be very challenging for children. Some changes include added pressures from friends and peers.
  • Pressures are a normal part of life and children need guidance from their teachers, parents and other adults so that they are able to handle these pressures in a positive way.
  • Some of these pressures may be drugs, truancy, sex, shop-lifting, bullying, cheating, and any other action that a child may not want.

CONDUCT DISORDER: SYMPTOMS AND BEHAVIORS

  • Bullying or threatening other children
  • Poor attendance or chronic truancy
  • Little empathy for others and lack of appropriate feelings of guilt or remorse
  • Frequent physical fights; use of weapons
  • Destruction of property

TICS DISORDER

  • Repetitive eye blinking
  • Repetitive clearing of the throat
  • Repetitive coughing
  • Repetitive fist clenching
  • Imitating or echoing the words of others
  • Leg jerks

ALCOHOLIC DISORDERS

  • Naïve, suggestible, a follower, a victim, vulnerable to peers
  • Poor judgment, reasoning, and memory
  • Isolated, sometimes depressed and/or suicidal
  • Poor social skills
  • Doesn’t learn from mistakes

ANXIETY DISORDERS

The most common anxiety disorders affecting children are:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Phobias
  • Social Phobia
  • Panic Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

ADJUSTMENT DISORDER

  • Appear subdued, irritable, anxious, or withdrawn
  • Resist going to sleep
  • Regress in the ability to toilet independently
  • Have increased separation anxiety

EATING DISORDERS,

INTERNET/MOBILE ADDICTION and

PSYCHOSEXUAL ISSUES were also discussed

Most of the parents have taken advices regarding the given psychological issues after interacting in the seminar, and they noticed mainly the Conduct Disorders, Eating Disorders, Concentration problems and Internet/Mobile addiction in their children.

Parents feel the need of assessment and treatment for their children. The process of consultation, assessment and behavior therapeutic techniques were explained to them.
