Adult Bed-wetting: Don’t even dare to overlook it!

Adult Bed - Wetting

Nocturnal enuresis or more commonly known as Bedwetting is a grave affliction and requires immediate attention. Bedwetting occurs due to improper bladder control during sleep. Despite its embarrassing consequences it is considered normal in many cases. In case of infants, this may be an indication of healthy development whereas in case of adults it is a matter of serious contemplation.

Causes of Bedwetting:

Bedwetting can be contributed to certain psychological and physical aberrations in some people.

The general causes that lead to bedwetting are:

1. Urinary tract infection (UTI)

2. Diabetes

3. Abnormal pauses during sleep or sleep apnea

4. Small bladder size

5. Enlarged prostrate

6. Stress, fear and anxiety

7. Constipation

In other instances, hormonal variations are said to be reasons for bedwetting. The anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) prompts the body to reduce production of urine during sleep. Lesser production of urine enables the bladder to store the urine overnight. On the contrary, people with ADH deficiency cannot accommodate high volumes of urine in their bladders thus resulting in nocturnal enuresis.

Diabetes is a chief competitor in the list of causes of bedwetting. People afflicted with diabetes cannot process glucose aptly, and thus, larger amounts of urine are produced. Other researches point out to an astounding fact that children who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are more prone to bedwetting. Furthermore, abnormal urine production in children and adults can also be probable cause for bedwetting.

Change your lifestyle to tackle bedwetting:

Lifestyle modification is preferred in treatment of major afflictions such as cancer, diabetes etc. Refrain from excessive water intake and establish an amiable schedule for drinking water. This way you can abstain from drinking water few hours before sleep and thus mitigate the threat of an incident. Consumption of necessary fluids before dinner will ensure that your bladder is empty before you go to sleep.

Give up consumption of alcohol and other beverages which contain caffeine. These two substances i.e. alcohol and caffeine act as diuretics and irritate the bladder thus boosting the chances of bedwetting.

Inculcate the habit of urinating every one or two hours and follow it strictly. Using the bathroom before bedtime kills the prospects for wetting the bed.

Adult bedwetting is quite embarrassing for many individuals and especially in the case of a young person, it may result in social stigma and some cases, they get ostracized from certain social circles. Stress and anxiety are the general causes for such events and can be related to a variety of incidents such as moving to a new home, routine alterations and the birth of a sibling.

These cases can be solved by consulting with the child. Parents should take the initiative to ask the child about his problem and shed off his inhibitions. Motivate your child through special appraisals for keeping the bed dry. Parents should keep in mind not to react aggressively to incidents of bedwetting.

Overview of bedwetting:

Bedwetting becomes nascent at the age of 7 years in most children. Bladder control is improveddrastically at this age. The solution to bedwetting lies in adopting a good lifestyle, medical treatment and family support as well as social support.
