All about Spinal Disc Problems

spinal disc problems

Spinal disc, also known as a slipped disc is a medical condition in which the spine of a person is affected due to tear and injury. Spinal discs are circular and are attached securely to the vertebrae between each bone. These discs act as a shock absorber to the spine.

There are many instances when this disc can lose its strength and cause painful symptoms. Spinal discs problems are very common as it involves stresses and movement associated with lower back and neck.

The most common spinal disc problems are:

Herniated or slipped disc

In this condition, the inner part of the disc may swell through outer membrane pushing the internal material to the outer side. It may be caused due to injury.
In some cases, all part of the core material may come out resulting in pressing against surrounding nerves and spinal cord. This results in severe pain. Initially, there may be spasms in the back or neck when undergoing movement but if nerves are affected; the pain radiates into arms and legs.

Degenerative disc

The spinal discs lose strength due to aging factors and become weaker and get damaged. It results from drying out of fluid in the spine and due to some cracks and injuries in the spine. These changes may result in pain.

Causes

This problem is caused due to the weakening or tearing of the outer ring of the spine resulting in coming out of the inner portion. It may happen with age. The other factors responsible for slip disc include the lifting of heavy objects can cause strain on the lower back. The person involved in physically active jobs is at increased risk for slipped disc injury.

People who are obese or overweight are also at increased risk for the slipped disc as the disc is not able to support the extra weight of the body making it imbalanced. This may cause muscle weakness.

Symptoms

In case of a herniated disc, a person may feel controllable pain, but if the damaged disc starts touching the nearby nerves or roots, the person may feel tingling, numbness, burning sensation, muscle weakness and difficulty in sitting, standing and walking.

A person experiences severe pain in the spine which is comforted by lying down. This pain may extend to arms or legs that worsen at night. Sometimes pain is felt only on the left side of the body
Nerve pain also occurs that can be sharp and sudden. The pressure of the nerves may move down in the legs or upwards in the neck.

Treatment

The treatment of slipped disc depends on the level of pain and dislocation of the disc. Many people go for painkillers to ease discomfort in the back.

Exercises are also very helpful in the treatment of slipped disc. The stretches involved in exercise strengthen the spine, back and muscles. These Exercises also helps in reducing pain.

In severe cases, doctors may go for surgery by removing the damaged portion of the disk.

Knee Injuries, Common Injuries, Treatment options and Prevention

Knee Injuries

The knee is one of the largest joints in the body. It is composed of various components such as cartilage bones, tendons, and ligaments. Its complex nature makes it vulnerable to many injuries. Any element of the knee can be injured if not taken proper care.

Common Knee Injuries

The most common knee injuries include dislocations, sprains, fractures, and soft tissue tears. In most of the cases, the damage consists of more than one structure of the knee. The most common signs of knee injury are swelling and pain in the injured part.

Some of the knee injuries are listed below:

Dislocation: A dislocation is a condition in which bones of the knee gets displaced from its original place. It can happen either completely or partially. In a dislocation, more than one bone may slip from its site. Knee dislocation involves many reasons such as falls, accidents or sports-related injuries.

Fractures: It includes the breakage of bones in the knee. Patella is a type of bone which is most commonly broken around the knee. The fractures in the knee are caused by falls, high energy trauma and accidents involving motor vehicle collisions.

Meniscal Tears: There are two rubbery wedges of cartilage present between shinbone and thighbone that are known as menisci. The meniscal tears commonly happen during sports. Tears in the meniscus cause suddenly due to twisting, rotating or cutting. Meniscal tears may also occur due to aging or arthritis-related problems.

Tendon Tears: Tendons connect bones and muscles. They are present in the form of soft tissues that can be injured easily due to overstretching, tear, fall or a hit. Weakening of bones due to aging can also cause tendon tears.

Cruciate ligament injuries: The Cruciate ligaments include anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligaments. These ligaments provide stability to the knee joint. The injuries in these ligaments are considered one of the most dangerous injuries. They commonly occur in sports such as athletes.

Treatment options

Treatment may vary based on the cause of the knee injury. In cases of overuse injuries or strain, rest and ice packs are advised by the doctors to allow healing of knee to with time. Medication can also be prescribed for pain management an inflammation. Other treatment options include:

Physical therapy: It involves specific exercises to restore and strengthen the function of the knee

Surgical treatment: It requires surgery around the knee in cases of severe injury such as anterior cruciate ligament injury. The injuries induced by trauma may require plating and bracing.

Prevention

  • Sportsperson or athletes should wear protective gear and appropriate shoes. Over-exercise and overrunning should also be avoided
  • Some exercises strengthen the bones and muscles. A person should perform, stretching before and after exercise to prevent knee
  • Proper nutrition such as protein, calcium and vitamin D rich diet helps in the maintenance of healthy muscles, bones, and ligaments
