Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia

It is a mental disorder that can usually be seen in late adolescence or early adulthood.

Some of the main characteristics include:

  • Delusions
  • Hallucinations
  • Cognitive difficulties

Usually, symptoms of Schizophrenia appear between ages 16 and 30. In rare cases, children may have Schizophrenia too.

Depending on the severity, duration, and frequency of the disorder, symptoms can vary;

Positive Psychotic Symptoms: Hallucinations, such as hearing voices, paranoid delusions, and exaggerated or distorted perceptions, beliefs, and behaviours.
Negative Symptoms: A loss or a decrease in the ability to initiate plans, speak, express emotion, or find pleasure.
Disorganization symptoms: Confused and disordered thinking and speech, trouble with logical reasoning, and sometimes bizarre behavior or abnormal movements.
Impaired cognition: Problems with attention, concentration, memory, and declining educational performance.

There is as such no evidence to prove the cause of Schizophrenia.

Certain factors that may contribute this may include:

  • Genetic inheritance
  • The chemical imbalance in the brain
  • Environmental factors
  • Drug-induced schizophrenia

Diagnoses of Schizophrenia can be made by observing the actions of the patient. In cases where drug use may be an inducing factor, a blood test may be ordered. Psychological evaluation holds the most importance.

Treatment for schizophrenia patients usually involves a combination of:

  • Medication- antipsychotics
  • Psychological counselling
  • Self-help resources

A person living with Schizophrenia must receive the full support of friends, their family, along with the community services on the onset. With therapy and supports, people learn social skills, cope with stress, identify early warning signs of relapse and prolong periods of remission.
